General Aim

The main goal of the Summer School is to offer a highly specialized training course dealing with the main theoretical and methodological issues involved in carrying out comparative research in the health field. The most recent accomplishments in scientific knowledge related to Medical and Health Sociology will be discussed and the Summer School will provide a chance to practise use of a range of techniques and research tools and will allow opportunities to establish research networks.

 

Participants

The International School is open to postgraduate students, researchers, lecturers, scholars and all who are interested in carrying out comparative research in the health field from a sociological point of view. It is particularly relevant for those who are open to inter-disciplinary contributions and to capitalizing on the potential for cross-fertilization.

Background knowledge and training of general Sociology and training in basic research methods and techniques in Social Sciences is a minimum requirement for participants. The maximum number of participants admitted will be 30: places will be on a first come first served basis.

 

Subject matters

Quantitative variable-oriented vs qualitative case-oriented methodologies: the foundations for an integrated methodological approach in comparative sociological research Crucial methodological issues in comparative sociological research: the small N problem, the Galton problem, the black box problem, the micro-macro levels problem, etc. Comparative research in Health and Medical Sociology: purposes, objects, approaches and designs Methods of survey sampling; design effects in complex sample surveys; small area estimation Using existing data sources in the health field: finding and accessing data sources, assessing data sources, analysing data The European Social Survey (ESS); the ISSP model of cross-national survey Research techniques in comparative research: questionnaire and question design in multicultural surveys; adaptation of survey instruments and translation issues Multi-level models in comparative research Qualitative and ethnographic methods for comparative research Analysing qualitative and quantitative comparative data Practical issues in planning and carrying out a comparative research in the health field

Schedule

From Monday 6th to Friday 10th July 3 sessions per day:

 

Morning sessions h. 9.00-11.00

                       h. 11.30-13.30

Afternoon session h. 15.00-17.00

 

Wednesday 8th July afternoon free for archaeological and naturalistic excursions

 

Each evening h. 21.00-23.00 open space for presentations by participants, focused conversations, etc.

 

Venue

The venue will be Porto Rhoca (www.portorhoca.com), a charming four-stars village club on a rocky promontory located at Squillace Lido, at a short distance from the beach and km. 22 from Catanzaro town, in the Gulf of Squillace of the Ionian Sea, the hearth of the Magna Gręcia . Transport from the airport of Lametia Terme will be available for free.

Full-board and half-board rooms at a special agreed price are available for participants: for booking, write an e-mail to TROPEA VIAGGI [pino@tropeavacanze.com] A leisure programme with archaeological and naturalistic excursions will also be available.

Please complete the registration form following all the instructions and highlighting the appropriate fee. The registration fee includes International Summer School participation, all the course documentation, coffee breaks, Social Dinner and transport from/to the airport of Lametia Terme.
